Starting a new year is more than just turning the page on a calendar – it’s an opportunity to redefine goals, reset mindsets, and, as family lawyers, make a positive impact.
A few years ago, I had a case that embodied this perfectly. A couple came to me in early January, embroiled in a bitter parenting dispute, each with grievances that seemed insurmountable. But what stood out was their shared commitment to starting the year on a positive note – for the sake of their child. That simple desire became the foundation for what followed.
Through mediation and collaborative law, we navigated common ground. The result? A resolution to their case AND a transformation in their co-parenting approach. Today, they communicate effectively, support one another’s parenting decisions, and, more importantly, provide a united front for their child. It was a reminder of the incredible potential a fresh start can bring, not just in our clients’ lives but in our professional roles as facilitators of positive change.
Now, as 2025 begins, I find myself reflecting on how we, as family lawyers, can harness the energy of new beginnings:
- Encourage clients to focus on resolutions that prioritize family unity and children’s well-being, stay proactive in seeking peaceful resolutions.
- Look for opportunities to use mediation or collaborative law, where possible, to create less adversarial outcomes, focus on collaboration, not contention.
- Personally, review the past year’s challenges and wins to refine how we approach cases and support our clients even better, find balance between a demanding career and personal well-being.
New Year’s resolutions aren’t just for personal life – they can be immensely powerful in our roles as legal professionals.
The new year isn’t just a date on the calendar – it’s a chance to reset, refocus, and set a positive tone for the months ahead.
What about you? How do you plan to make 2025 a positive year for your clients or yourself?
